Madvapes was started in July 2009 in Huntersville, NC. Beginning with a humble start from a home office, Madvapes quickly expanded from home office, to garage, to rented warehouse space and recently to a 10,000 sq foot warehouse.
The company that was never meant to start.
As a programmer for over 30 years, I was writing and testing shopping cart software for a client and needed a product to test credit card processing with.
I had just happened to start vaping and put the first picture I came across, a simple connector that I had made, as a sample product on the 'test' website. Connectors at the time were very hard to come by apparently. After finishing the client project, I moved on to my next project and surprisingly enough, I received a strange email for an order. I didn't realize where the order had come from and after some research found that the 'test' website was still running with the one product on it. I was getting more and more into vaping and building my own mods so decided to throw some box mods and other parts on the website to see what would happen (who doesn't need extra income). I got a few orders here and there but also got requests to add new items that went along with the mod building theme the website had. As I added items and project instructions, I also received more requests to add additional products.
Slowly and cautiously, I made my first purchase from China, SLB, and bought some kits and atomizers thinking at worst, I'd have vaping supplies for a while. Well, the products sold and to my surprise, I needed to order more. My first order from China was for $270 and my wife was ready to kill me for risking that type of money on a whim. My 2nd order was for $1500, oh my. The FDA was on everything and I was panicked about losing my shirt but my orders made it through and sales continued to grow.
My executive chef neighbor Scott, who would come over my house on Friday for a couple of beers, was always itching for a smoke (as I was still cheating and my wife still smoked) but was intrigued by vaping. He didn't want any nic so never tried mine. I only sold China e-liquid with nic at the time so after some probing, we decided to make our own batch of e-Liquid. Very Berry was the very first flavor and it was fantastic. I was still programming full time and packing orders into the wee hours of the morning as Madvapes continued to grow.
Eventually, packing orders until 3 in the morning and then getting up and being at work by 8 am was getting a bit tricky. What was somewhat bittersweet was that the company I worked as a programmer (logistics software) for over 10 years, had just lost their biggest client. Things were going to get tough and I knew it. I started spending more time working on Madvapes and getting more products in, all the while my paycheck was delayed, bouncing or missing. I finally made the switch to working at Madvapes full time in April of 2010. I continued to work without pay for another 8 months while working to help Madvapes grow. It was not an easy time.
TopVapor (our own private line of e-liquid) was still not sold on Madvapes but we were giving out samples with orders. People loved it and requested we put it on the website. We started slowly with several flavors and several nic levels only. Eventually we added more and more flavors and now made to order is our standard.
My own personal transition from analogs to e-cigs has shown me the tremendous progress and promise these products have. Madvapes will never sell a product that we won't personally use. Madvapes has grown to over 30 employees and not so surprisingly, each and every person has different favorites, pv's and flavors that they like. It's a great testing ground for us with new products and new flavors.
Being from a Techinical support and customer service background, Madvapes is based on what I always did and that every customer is treated the way that I would want to be treated as a customer. We always try our hardest to make sure that you are happy with our products and pricing.
To all of you, from all of us at Madvapes - Thank you and Happy eCommerce!
