One of the biggest complaints we get revolve around a burnt taste with a new cartomizer. Because there are so many different sizes and types of cartomizers, we are reviewing some simple steps and recommendations for filling them when they are brand new and proper usage to make them last.
The idea is simple. A cartomizer comes complete as both heating element and a fabric often called polyfill. The polyfill is susceptible to burning if it is not damp when the cartomizer is used. Hence it is necessary to fill and prime the cartomizer before use. It is very important that you not only add a sufficient amount of e-liquid to a brand new cartomizer but that you let it sit for a few minutes to allow the e-liquid to fully wick all the way through. Since some cartomizers are packed with polyfill a little more tightly than others, it is better to err on the side of caution and wait longer rather than shorter periods. It is also better to over fill your cartomizer rather than under fill as you can always shake or blow the extra juice out. But once a cartomizer tastes burnt, it is never going to be the same.
Pictured above is a picture of 3 different cartomizers. On the right they have the drip tip or rubber stopper removed so that they can be filled with e-liquid.
To fill your cartomizer simply remove the rubber tip or stopper from the top of the cartomizer and add the e-liquid to the tube. It is best to tilt the cartomizer a bit and drip evenly around the outside to make sure that you dampen the polyfill all the way around as shown below. If your cartomizer does not come with a drip tip, you can purchase one to make it easier to refill.
The picture in the middle shows the e-liquid wicked 2/3 of the way down. The picture on the right shows the polyfill completely damp and ready to vape. Click on the picture to see a larger view. It took about 5 minutes for this cartomizer to become completely damp. It can speed up the process if you blow into the top to force the liquid down. You may want to do that into a napkin or over a trash can as some e-liquid will blow through the cartomizer.
You also need to make sure that you do not let your cartomizer go dry. This will have the same effect giving you a burnt taste if your carto is dried out. Also, dual coil cartomizers, while generally bigger, also go through e-liquid at twice the rate of single coil cartomizers. So depending on the volume of e-liquid your cartomizer holds, all that great vapor probably means refilling more often.
So remember to prime those cartomizers well at the beginning and keep them damp and they will last you quite a long time. Below are some tips on the amount of e-liquid that is necessary for many of our cartomizers when they are brand new to adequately prime them.
Cartomizer Type # of Drops of E-Liquid To Prime
Single 510 Coil Standard 15-20
Single 510 Coil Mega 20-25
510 XL CE2 15-20
MadVapes Dual Coil 20-25
Dual Coil Standard 15-20
Dual Coil Mega 20-25
Dual Coil Mega XXL 80-85
eGo Mega Dual Coil 80-85
801 Mega XL 60-65
801 Cartomizer 40-45
**20 Drops is equal to about 1 ml. This is helpful for the CE2 models that require a syringe to fill. The syringes measure in ml.
An atomizer works differently in that you either direct drip right into the atomizer or you use a cartridge. The two above pictures show 3 atomizers. The one on the left is an 801 atomizer. The middle and right are both 510 atomizers. They are different brands. Note that the one in the middle does not come with a cartridge. Shown on the right the 3 atomizers have the cartridge removed. I placed a 510 cartridge, that is sold separately, with the middle atomizer. Notice it has polyfill already in the cartridge. The other two would require polyfill, also available at MadVapes, to be used as a cartridge.
A cartridge holds 6-10 drops of e-liquid depending on the size. Remove the cartridge from the atomizer turn it upside down and add the e-liquid. Then add about 3 drops of e-liquid directly into the atomizer to prime it. Replace the cartridge and you are ready to go. A cartridge will not last as long as a cartomizer between fills since it is filled with less e-liquid.
If you are direct dripping, remove the drip tip and add 3-6 drops of e-liquid and you are ready to go. The amount of e-liquid you use depends on the size of the atomizer. A 306 which is relatively small will take about 3 drops but an 801 might take 5 or 6. You don't want the atomizer dry but you do not want to flood it either. Remember that you can burn an atomizer as well if the atomizer dries out completely. The heating element will scorch the dried up e-liquid giving it a burnt taste if you don’t keep it filled. Since direct dripping uses only a couple drops you will need to add e-liquid often.
Keep an eye on your cartomizer or atomizer. You will soon get a feel for how often you need to fill it. Since everyone vapes differently; some having longer drags or stronger pulls than others, it will be a little different for everyone on the same device. What voltage you are running on your mod or e-cigarette, dual or single coil, etc. will also play a factor. So check your carto or atty often until you are comfortable for your own usage. Then just keep on vaping! |
